Training activities

Basically APCA conducts two types of training programmes viz., Regular and Special Training Programs for prison and correctional officers.

1. Nine month basic course for newly recruited
2. Six month basic course for newly recruited
3. Three month basic course for in-service & promotees with more than 5 years of service.
4. One Month Refresher course for those who have already undergone training in basic courses at APCA.
5.
10 days computer Course for those who will be handling Computers while on duty.

Apart from the above regular courses, short-term courses are being conducted by APCA.

Since its inception on 1.10.1979, so far 3002  Officers have been trained as on 14.08.2010 at APCA including present officers.

The officers so far trained were from Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Chatisgarh, Delhi, Goa, Jammu & Kashmir, Karnataka, Kerala, Manipur, Mizoram, Nagaland, Orissa, Punjab, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Tripura, Uttaranchal, West Bengal States and Union Territories of Andaman & Nicobar, Pondicherry.

COURSE FEE : All the Prison and Correctional Officers from Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala States undergoing training at APCA are provided with free boarding and lodging.

For Prison and Correctional Officers of States, other than above , the course fee per trainee officer towards boarding, lodging, infrastructural and instructional cost.

INDOOR TRAINING : Indoor training includes theory classes on Criminal Justice System, Psychology, Computer Applications, Sociology and Social Work, Penology, Prison & Correctional Administration, Criminology and Victimology, Constitution and Human Rights, Criminal Law and Management principles. The method of training includes lectures, group discussions, seminars, exposure to audio-visuals, etc.

APCA - Indoor TrainingTo facilitate on the job training, trainees are placed in different correctional and allied institutions. This includes field visits, field placement, study tours, etc. To develop a sense of humanity in the officers, they are placed in institutions for mentally ill patients, leprosy patients, etc. Trainees are also given opportunities to mingle with leading professionals and personalities in corrections and allied fields.

APCA - Indoor TrainingField visits include visits to correctional institutions such as Central Prison, Women’s Prison, Observation Home, After Care Home, the Regional Probation Office at Vellore, the Juvenile Home, Ranipet, other District and Sub-Jails in Andhra Pradesh and allied institutions like de-addiction centers, centers for the mentally ill and lepers patients, center for rural development, the Finger Print Bureau and Forensic Lab, Fire Services etc. at Vellore. Subsequently the trainees are placed in these institutions for study and they submit study reports on these field placement programmes.

APCA - Indoor TrainingEvery batch of trainee officers is regularly sent on study tour to North and South India (to study the working conditions of prisons, correctional and allied institutions in the different states). Through this they are exposed to the various institutions other than those in their own States and they also get the opportunity to mingle and share knowledge with their counterparts and senior officers from across the country.

 

OUT DOOR TRAINING : As a healthy body is integral to maintain a healthy mind, APCA gives adequate importance for out-door activities such as physical training, musketry, parade, karate, yoga, gymnastics, games, sword lathi drills, etc.

Examinations are also conducted. A series of trips to the shooting range at Salamanatham 25 Kms from APCA ensures good practice in shooting to the trainees.

A shooting examination is also held at the end of the course.  As a healthy body is integral to maintain a healthy  mind, APCA gives adequate importance for out-door activities such as :

Parade,  Karate,  Self-Defense,  Gymnastics,  Commando Operations,  Fire Fighting, First Aid, Preventive Measures,  Security, Various Aspects, Rescue Operations, Mob Operations, Bomb Detection and Bomb Disposal Methods,  Locks and Releases, Outer Security Measures, Internal Security Measures, Creation of Security Zone, Spy System, Vigilance, Techniques in Self-Defense and Games and Recreation.
